Introduction to IWR6843ISK Evaluation Kit:

The IWR6843ISK is an easy-to-use 60 GHz mmWave radar sensor evaluation kit based on the IWR6843 device. It features a long-range antenna configuration and provides access to real-time point-cloud data over a USB interface.

This board enables evaluation of:

  • IWR6843 (Single-chip 60-GHz to 64-GHz intelligent mmWave sensor integrating processing capability)

  • IWR6443 (Single-chip 60-GHz to 64-GHz intelligent mmWave sensor integrating MCU and hardware accelerator)

The kit supports:

  • Power over USB

  • Processed radar output streaming

  • Industrial and embedded software development

It is widely used in industrial sensing, presence detection, and radar-based AI systems.

Key Features:

  • 60–64 GHz mmWave radar sensor

  • 4 RX (receive) antennas

  • 3 TX (transmit) antennas

  • 120° azimuth field of view (FoV)

  • 30° elevation FoV

  • Integrated ARM R4F MCU

  • Integrated C674x DSP

  • Onboard FFT acceleration

  • USB interface for power and data

  • Onboard power consumption monitoring

  • 60-pin high-speed host interface

The IWR6843ISK is a complete radar processing board. It includes:

  • Radar RF front-end

  • ADC

  • Signal processing hardware

  • ARM microcontroller

  • DSP core

  • UART interface

  • USB-to-serial bridge

*It is not just an antenna module.

For an ideal POC, we can:

  • Power it via USB

  • Flash firmware

  • Stream processed radar data

  • Connect directly to TI’s visualizer tools

*No additional MCU is required for standard evaluation.

Software & Tool Support

The kit is supported by:

Using mmWave Studio for Raw ADC Capture:

To capture raw ADC data via LVDS, you need a DCA1000EVM board. The IWR6843ISK can be configured via mmWave Studio, but raw capture requires DCA1000.

The DCA1000 enables:

  • Access to raw radar ADC samples

  • Deep RF research

  • Custom algorithm development

MMWAVEICBOOST (This board is optional)

Used for:

  • Debugging via CCS (Code Composer Studio)

  • Software trace

  • Deeper firmware development

*Not required for running out-of-box demos or streaming point-cloud data.

Quick Start with IWR6843ISK

  1. Connect USB cable to laptop

  2. Flash demo firmware

  3. Open mmWave Demo Visualizer

  4. Select COM ports

  5. Send configuration

  6. View live range and point-cloud data

Radar output is numeric data including:

  • Range (meters)

  • Velocity (m/s)

  • Angle (degrees)

  • X, Y, Z coordinates

  • SNR

Price and Availability of IWR6843ISK in India

Approximate price ranges between ₹25,000 – ₹35,000 INR (Including customs + Delivery)

  • Mouser India

  • Element14 India

  • TI Store (stock dependent)

Radar evaluation kits are industrial-grade hardware, so this price range is considered standard for mmWave development.

Use Case: Sugarcane Crop Growth Monitoring

Problem

Traditional crop growth measurement relies on manual inspection. It is:

  • Labor-intensive

  • Inconsistent

  • Not continuous

Proposed Solution

Deploy IWR6843ISK as a non-contact radar sensor node to measure:

  • Canopy height

  • Growth rate

  • Structural density

How it works
  1. Mount radar above or beside sugarcane rows

  2. Radar emits 60 GHz signals

  3. Reflections from canopy are processed

  4. Height is calculated from range data

  5. Growth trends are logged over time

Why It could work well for Sugarcane

Sugarcane:

  • Has strong vertical structure

  • Provides good radar reflectivity

  • Grows to 2–4 meters

The radar can:

  • Detect canopy top

  • Measure height change over weeks

  • Detect stagnation or abnormal growth

Edge AI Integration

On SBC:

  • Read UART data

  • Extract nearest canopy reflection

  • Convert to height

  • Log daily growth

  • Trigger alerts

  • Run ML models for growth-stage classification

  • Detect stress anomalies

Conclusion

The IWR6843ISK Evaluation Kit can be used for:

  • Agricultural POC

  • Industrial sensing

  • Embedded Linux radar integration

  • Edge AI crop analytics

The IWR6843ISK Evaluation Kit also offers the best balance of:

  • Cost

  • Capability

  • Ease of use

  • Toolchain maturity

It is ideal for launching a proof-of-concept sugarcane growth monitoring system.
